3. Paragraph [Compare/Contrast]:
Using quotations from both passages, describe how each author defines success.

First paragraph (theme + thesis statement):

Although society judges people based on how much money they have, the feeling of true success comes from helping others. Both "Gracious Goodness" by Marge Piercy and "To Have Succeeded" by Ralph Waldo Emerson define success as acting selflessly to help others.

Second paragraph (text 1):

In "Gracious Goodness", Piercy describes helping a wounded, trapped bird and the satisfaction she feels helping it escape. The author "yanked out the barbs", and "cut and drew out the barb" (17-18). The author describes that she felt "a sunrise in the belly" because she was able to free the bird (23). When the author asserts that "nothing (she has) ever done" seems as virtuous, the reader understands that to Piercy, success means acting selflessly (24-26).
