English 12
A Complicated Kindness
1. ACK Assignment Criteria (other than your essay at the end):
- For assigned chapters, you will be creating questions, pulling out important quotations (as they relate to theme, character/plot development), and summarizing the chapter in a few, full sentences critically summarizing each chapter.
- For instance, yesterday's homework would look something like this:
--Entry 1 (34-55):
Nomi tells Travis about Sheridan whose dad got excommunicated and whose mother killed herself. Nomi relays the story of her parents' first date was a community shunning and the rules of their church when a member disobeys the rules. Nomi questions the rules and practices of her faith and imagines scenarios as to where her sister and mother escaped to.
*Could the deranged events that happened to Sheridan's family related to Nomi's? What are the factors that cause members in the community to rebel?
*What is the truth behind Mr. Quiring? What effect does he have on the Nickel family?
*What is the significance of Nomi's recollection of the dresses? Where did they land?
*What "complicate[s]" the "kindness" of the people in town (46)?
*What "holes" is the Mouth trying to fill with the ice-cream (51)? Why is Nomi curious?
*What is significant about the artificiality of their town in terms of tourism?
*Why is it easy for Tash and Trudie to leave town, while it is impossible for others?
- "She hadn't been aware of her options" (36).
- "Trudie had told me and Tash that she thought Sheridan's Dad should have left town to save his mom the pain of having to pretend he was dead" (37).
- The shunning story "complete reinforced [Nomi's] belief system of right and wrong" (44).
- Nomi doesn't like when Trudie asserts that there is "always forgiveness" (44).
- "...there were no adults in our town" (46).
- "Here, life is so refreshingly uncomplicated" (47).
- "I wanted to experience goodness and humanity outside of any religious framework" (48).
