PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS TONIGHT

English 12
The Great Gatsby
1. Last day to hand in Hamlet work (late).
2. Review Chapter 2 questions.
3. Read Chapter 3, answer questions.
4. Homework: Read p. 60-69 of chapter 4, answer questions #1-3.

Consider possible essay topics:

A. Artificiality, or exploring what is real and what is fake, is one of the major themes of The Great
Gatsby. Give some examples of how the author develops this theme in the novel, and explain why this might be an important theme for Fitzgerald. Is he making a larger statement about his generation?

B. Reinvention and the particularly American preoccupation with reinvention is another recurring
theme of The Great Gatsby. Give some examples of this act of reinvention in the in the novel. What
characters set out to reinvent themselves and how? Do you think the author believes that reinvention
is possible and if so, at what cost?

3. Essay: Once multiple choice portion is completed and handed in, you may take out your outlines for your essay. Essay should be five, fully developed paragraphs. You may not take essay home. If you do not finish today, you may hand it back and finish tomorrow.
